5 things you need to know about Islam

The following section describes the core beliefs of a Muslim as succinctly as possible.
This section is simply intended to inform, and not offend nor preach.

Whilst detailed beliefs may vary between Muslim sects, there are core beliefs set down here that are common to all Muslims. The Pillars of Islam are five basic acts in Islam, considered obligatory for all believers. The Quran presents them as a framework for worship and a sign of commitment to the faith. They are;

  • Creed
  • Prayer
  • Charity
  • Fasting
  • Pilgrimage

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world according to research carried out by the Pew Research Center. 26.4% of world population is Muslims which is 1.6 billion people in 2010. Amongst Muslims, the consciousness of religious beliefs and willingness to talk about them is generally taken for granted, whereas British social conventions make a taboo of discussing religious differences.

It is worth noting that compared to most religions, especially in western society; young Muslims tend to have an awareness of their essential beliefs and can articulate these and their associated practices reasonably well.
